It is 7 AM CEST. The EU citizen initiative calling for a ban on "conversion therapy" (here meaning, pseudoscientific attempts to "cure" LGBTQs) is less than 250,000 votes from success. This is astounding, the votes have like, *tripled* in a week.

The page says voting ends "May 17", and I wish I knew if that meant "at midnight tonight" or "midnight tomorrow" or what. Uh. Do you know

Germany is ~6,000 local votes from endorsing it. Are there 6,000 Germans on this website

We are so close to succeeding in getting enough signatures on this petition to request to ban conversion practices in the EU, and we only have one day left.

Please sign it, even if you don't think petitions like these work. Because even if they don't work, signing it takes barely any time, and giving a signal to the EU that this should be banned in the entire union will at least remind the politicians that this is something their voters care about.

Friends from the EU. It doesn't matter which EU country you're from, it is very important that you sign the petition for ban on conversion therapy across the EU.
The threshold has been reached for number of countries but very far from the target on raw numbers of votes. It does not matter which EU country you're from. every vote counts.

When scholarly discussions happen in private Slack channels or get buried in Twitter threads, most researchers miss out. Sciety has secured funding from @nlnet to build something better. We're working with @bonfire, to develop a space for preprint discussion that is open, interoperable and will allow any preprint evaluation community to replicate and run themselves

🎉🔬 More news this weekend.
@sciety (eLife's preprint evaluation platform) has secured funding from @nlnet to build a Bonfire flavour for federating preprint reviews and discussions.

This means federated, community-governed spaces for open discourse around scientific preprints outside traditional publishing gatekeepers.

As we approach the release of Bonfire 1.0, this isn’t your typical launch announcement. Instead, it’s a moment to reflect on how we’ve built Bonfire, a roadmap of values, methods, and intentions – and an invitation to define what comes next.

In a world of “move fast and break things,” we’ve chosen a different tempo — one rooted in care, deep listening, and collective stewardship...

For me this isn't even about empathy or sympathy (though there's value in those as well), it is just straight-up a human rights thing. Once you have decided that there is *any* category of human that can be treated as less-than-human you've said that humanity is conditional, and so are the rights that come with it. You've already lost, you've granted the fascists their point because *you agree with them* that some people don't deserve to be treated like humans.

Tech Companies Apparently Do Not Understand Why We Dislike AI

It's becoming increasingly apparent that one of the reasons why tech companies are so enthusiastic about shoving AI into every product and service is that they fundamentally do not understand why people dislike AI. I will elaborate. I was recently made aware of the Jetbrains developer ecosystem survey, which included a lot of questions about AI. After I answered some of them negatively (and possibly…

People who get upset over trans people are upset because they think it's dangerous for someone else to define who they are for themselves, rather than having society define who they are.

Transitioning is an act of taking control over one's life in a profound way, and authoritarian motherfuckers everywhere are pissed that we take their power away.

Our act of simply being ourselves effectively tells other people and society to shove their control over us right up their collective ass.
